Major conflicts of interest, the fascism and German advances dominating Europe were preventing the defense industry specialization that could change the course of the war, and the hardest part of the task fell on the shoulders of the Allied commanders. The victory that would determine the fate of the continent would come from the Normandy coast of France 81 years ago.<\/p>\n

The Normandy Landings, one of the significant events of World War II, took place between June and September 1944. It was the largest sea, land, and air operation ever seen. The landings changed the course of the war and also altered the destiny of Europe. France was liberated from invasion, and a secure front was established.<\/p>\n
The British, American, Canadian, and French forces launched their offensive against the German army simultaneously on five beaches in Normandy. The season when the sea is calmest and the water level is lowest was chosen. The allies arriving by sea, together with the forces descending behind the German front, launched an intense naval and air assault at great cost. Despite many tragedies, the landing achieved its objective and the allies forced the Germans to retreat. Germany, which was unbeatable in land warfare thanks to its defense technology, was unable to withstand the storm coming from the sea.<\/p>\n
Hans Speidel, who served under Rommel, the most famous field marshal of World War II, clearly described the consequences of Hitler’s Germany’s aggression and the chaos experienced behind the front lines in his book, which recounts the behind- the-scenes story of the Normandy Landings. The US and British forces planning the withdrawal, however, were unaware of the weaknesses of the opposing force.<\/p>\n
Today, those who visit the battlefields encounter museums and monuments recounting those days at almost every historical site and settlement in the region. Almost all of them convey a message aimed at glorifying the alliance between the US, Britain, and France. However, General Charles De Gaulle, who added dimension to the resistance with the army he established to liberate France from invasion, did not see this movement as the result of an alliance; he believed that the US and Britain were acting in their own interests. In fact, for this reason, after becoming president, he refused to celebrate the Normandy Landings and defined the AMGOT (Allied Military Government of Occupied Territories) as a plan to settle in France. So it could hardly be said that France was allied with its current Western allies.<\/p>\n

Only their enemies were common. After the landings, as the Allied forces advanced on Paris, Charles de Gaulle would attempt to thwart the plans of the US and Britain. The Normandy landings played a significant role in ending World War II and defeating the Germans. Even today, the propaganda that “the US saved France” continues to be spread at Omaha Beach or during D-Day celebrations, but no one was ever able to convince General de Gaulle of this view during his lifetime.<\/p>\n
Today, both the coastal areas and inland regions of Normandy offer many opportunities to truly experience the legacy of the Normandy Landings. Omaha Beach, Colleville-sur-Mer, and Saint-Laurent- sur-Mer, the beaches where the Allied forces landed. Traces of the landings, information panels, monuments, and cemeteries can be found at each one. A short walk from the sea takes you to Pointe du Hoc, where you can see the battlefield and the trenches that remain above ground. The remains of the Mulberry Harbor, artificially constructed over the sea in Arromanches-les-Bains, offer a rather interesting sight. The Arromanches 360 Museum also adds value to this charming coastal town. The town of Bayeux is already a tourist attraction because it has preserved its pre-war historical fabric. The Pegasus Bridge is one of the symbols of the D-Day landings due to its role in the war.
