<\/p>\nIstanbul, which will host the European Games in 2027, had a special day on August 24th. The Bosphorus Cross Continental Swim Competition brought festivities to Istanbul that day. The Turkish National Olympic Committee’s event was held for the 37th time this year and saw a record number of participants.<\/p>\n

A total of 1,855 male and 811 female athletes participated in the 6.5 kilometer race across different age categories. In the men’s general classification, Do\u011fukan Ula\u00e7 took the first place with a time of 56 minutes and 49 seconds, second place was G\u00f6khan Yi\u011fito\u011flu with a one second difference, and Mehmet \u00c7a\u011flar took third place with a time of 58 minutes and 18 seconds. In the women’s general classification, Su Inal took the first place with a time of 58 minutes and 54 seconds. Eyl\u00fcl Nisa Ay\u00e7etin was second with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 13 seconds, Hilal Zeynep Sara\u00e7 finished in third place with a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes and 21 seconds.<\/p>\n
The event, in which those who complete the competition are awarded the “Cross Continental Swimmer” certificate, was selected as the “Best Open Water Swimming Organization of the Year” by the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) in 2016 and ranked first in the “World’s Top 100 Open Water Swimming Competitions” list in 2019. The competition, which unites the continents of Asia and Europe with strokes and symbolizes the unifying power of sports and international friendship, invites you to be a unique event accompanied by historical and natural beauties.<\/p>\n
The event, which is one of the most prestigious organization of swimming sport, reflects the spirit of olympism and offers an unforgettable swimming experience to the participants. On the course from Kanl\u0131ca to Kuru\u00e7e\u015fme, participants test their physical and mental limits while coping with different currents, and it becomes an international stage, bringing swimmers together from nearly eighty countries.<\/p>\n
Despite the fact that it was officially organized in 1989 with the participation of 68 athletes, cross continental swimming in Bosphorus has a long-established history. Photos of a similar event held nationally in the city’s sports history in the 1930s also prove this. It is also known that a tea party was organized for the athletes in Bebek after the race and medals and trophies were given by the governor of the city.<\/p>\n

Similar scenes are now being repeated every year with an increasing number of world athletes. The international qualification of the competition was awarded when 22 contestants from Czechoslovakia and two contestants from the USA joined the competition in 1992. The course record holder in men is Polat Uzer Turnal\u0131 (38:22.00 in 2021) and in women is Beren Kayrak (40:50.35 in 2006). The competition, which is open to participants in 12 age categories from 14 to 70 and older, also includes a paraswim category.
