The Gstaad Yacht Club in Switzerland has a peculiar feature. Rather than being like others overlooking the same lake, it was founded with the vision of creating a yacht club far from the water, even on a mountain top. Another feature is that its founding father and honorary founding president is the deposed King Constantine II, the last king of Greece.<\/p>\n

In 1996, Rene Fatton bought a classic motor yacht in St. Tropez and incorporated the identity he deemed appropriate for his boat into its flag, towels, hull, and even the pockets of his jackets. It said “Yacht Club de Gstaad” everywhere, but there was no such club. When people who saw the emblem and didn’t know it was a virtual entity kept asking how they could join this club, the idea of establishing a real club was born. After the founding team completed the necessary procedures, the Gstaad Yacht Club was officially established in 1998. Immediately afterwards, the deposed Greek King Constantine II, known for his love of sailing, was offered the honorary presidency. The king’s influence increased both the number of members and the visibility of the GYC emblem. Now it was time to acquire a clubhouse. At this point, King Constantine’s GYC vision came into play. The club’s facilities would be built in the mountains and would stand out from other yacht clubs due to its location.<\/p>\n

GYC, which has grown into an international club with over 400 members from more than 35 countries, continues to bring its members and guests together in the mountains. The club supports maritime projects at every level, from young sailors to professional sailors, and is one of Switzerland’s key players, particularly in Olympic sailing and classic yachts. One of the club’s missions was to organize a race between original yachts that are a hundred years old or older, known as the Centenary Trophy.
