Fisherman’s Paintership

The first issue of Sirena’s Whisper cited Cevat Şakir, known as Fisherman of Halikarnassus Balıkçısı, as the inspiration for the magazine’s name. The exhibition titled “Painter Cevat Şakir: The Visual Heritage of Halikarnas Balıkçısı”, organized at Inspera Bodrum Culture and Arts under the leadership of the Bodrum Maritime Museum, provided the opportunity to discover the painterly side of the famous author.

The Bodrum Maritime Museum organizes important events every year to publicize and keep Halikarnas Balıkçısı’s legacy alive. Since 2011, it has kept his name alive by displaying valuable objects from his summer life alongside his personal belongings. “Hello Day”, which began being celebrated on April 17th, Halikarnas Balıkçısı’s birthday, in 2022, is also becoming a tradition. In this context, the painting and illustration exhibition curated by design historian Ömer Durmaz attracted attention by revealing a selection hidden in private collections. Many of the works were connected to the sea, as was the personality of the creator.
